A Mysterious Expedition into the Unknown
Some games capture your imagination in a way that stays with you long after the credits roll. Amerzone: The Explorer’s Legacy was one of those games for me. My dad introduced me to yet another game when I was a child. Something about its unique story and the mysterious world grabbed my attention right away.
What is Amerzone: The Explorer’s Legacy?
Released in 1999 by Benoît Sokal and Microids. Amerzone is a graphical point-and-click adventure game where you play as a journalist investigating an old mystery. A remake was released on April 24th, 2025, but this blogpost shows images from the original game. The story revolves around an explorer and his claims of a lost world inhabited by mythical white birds. By uncovering journals, solving puzzles, and exploring a world full of secrets, you try to uncover the truth behind the legends of Amerzone.
You navigate the game using a Hydraflot – a hybrid riverboat that can transform into a plane, helicopter, and even a submarine(!) – to return a precious egg belonging to the mysterious white birds of Amerzone.
My Experience with Amerzone
I was instantly captivated by the game’s unique style and atmosphere. It has an almost poetic feel, with its beautiful environments and calm pacing. Exploring Amerzone felt like flipping through an old explorer’s journal (which you actually do). Each location holding a story, and every puzzle brought me closer to the truth.
However, there must have been a bug with my old CD (though it was an original) because it was impossible to get pass two tricorn buffalos (after one of them damaging the engine, I couldn’t click on anything to continue), preventing me from completing the game as a child. But nearly 20 years later, I finally had the chance to get past those buffalos and experience the entire adventure from start to finish. Seeing the ending of this incredible journey at last, even though the ending was a bit unexpected…
